RI-SI-DARIAH

Development of Research Infrastructure for International Competitiveness of the Slovenian RRI SPACE – RI-SI – DARIAH

The project “DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FOR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS OF THE SLOVENIAN RRI SPACE – RI-SI – DARIAH”, whose holder is the Institute of Contemporary History, is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund with the participation of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia.

The Slovenian DARIAH-SI infrastructure is a part of the European Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH), which aims, among other things, to support and stimulate digitally-oriented research and education in the field of the humanities.

DARIAH-SI, organised as a consortium of partners (the Institute of Contemporary History and the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts), is a distributed digital infrastructure consisting of a network of services, tools, data, people, and technologies that enable and support research in the field of the digital humanities. In accordance with the DARIAH guidelines, its activities cover the needs of all major actors in the humanities and other relevant fields in Slovenia aimed at developing the national digital research infrastructure.

The main purpose of the investment project “Development of Research Infrastructure for International Competitiveness of the Slovenian RRI SPACE – RI-SI – DARIAH”, co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sport, and the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund (purchase of research equipment 2019–2020), is the improvement of the DARIAH-SI hardware or the purchase of:

  • three dual-processor servers designed to increase the processing, memory, and disk capacity of the existing hardware (192 processor cores, 768 GB RAM, 360 TB disk capacity);
  • a new JBOD server (64 processor cores, 256 GB RAM, 120 TB disk array);
  • 256 TB of JBOD disk array;
  • a CISCO switch;
  • a server cabinet and uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

The project will facilitate faster, more intensive and high-quality involvement in major international projects, thus helping to strengthen the network of human resources in the scientific research infrastructure and enabling the free flow of people, ideas, and knowledge in the European Research Area.

A: Development objectives (general objectives) of the project:

  • organising and managing activities and services within the humanities research community;
  • ensuring the effective integration of available resources, tools, and services with broader support in the existing research activities into the development of infrastructures at the national and international level;
  • ensuring effective promotion of digital methods in humanities research to achieve sustainable development of digital humanities;
  • ensuring full access to the data and services of the open and freely accessible DARIAH infrastructure, regardless of the researchers’ countries of origin.

B: Specific objectives of the project:

  • ensuring the continued operation of the infrastructure’s technical services by upgrading its hardware,
  • upgrading the equipment to also allow for experimental work and development in infrastructure service provision;
  • providing additional disk arrays to flexibly accommodate the projects’ needs for additional storage capacity;
  • ensuring interoperability with the existing national infrastructures, so that the existing and new national capacities can be used for scale-out and fail-over, thus reducing the risk of service failure or data loss due to a catastrophic failure in the local centre (integration into the network of computing clusters of the Slovenian National Supercomputing Network – SLING – consortium and thus into the national research infrastructure HPC RIVR).
