Jure Gašparič

Education and professional experience:

  • PhD in historical sciences (2006, University of Ljubljana).
  • Studied at the Department of History in Ljubljana and in the academic year 1999/2000 at the Comenius University in Bratislava.
  • 2001-2006 Junior Researcher, 2008-2013 Research Associate and since 2013 Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Contemporary History.
  • Until 2014 assistant professor for contemporary history at the History Department of the Faculty of Arts in Maribor. 
  • In the 2008/2009 academic year guest lecturer at the History Department of the Faculty of Education of J. A. Comenius University in Bratislava.
  • Editor-in-chief of the main Slovenian scientific publication in the field of contemporary history, Prispevki za novejšo zgodovino/Contributions to Contemporary History (www.ojs.inz.si).
  • Member of the editorial boards of Zgodovina za vse (Slovenia), Verbum Historiae (Slovakia), and Sensus Historiae (Poland).
  • Reviewer and evaluator (research agencies, journals, textbooks, exhibitions, historical documentaries).
  • Member of the Board of directors of the international network of research institutions, the European Information and Research Network on Parliamentary History (EuParl.net).
  • 2019 to 2020 served as director of the Institute of Contemporary History (refocusing the institute on digital humanities).
  • 2020 to 2021 served as state secretary for science and higher education at the Slovenian Ministry of Education, Science and Sports.

 

Research focus:

  • Slovenian and Yugoslav political history from the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy to the present day.
  • Historical issues of the Central European area in the 19th and 20th centuries (history of political parties and representative systems, legal and historical issues, political transition, public use and abuse of history).
  • History of parliamentarism, applied history.
  • Research work is methodologically rooted in the concept of political culture and is driven by the possibilities of the new research tools of the Digital Humanities (mainly corpus linguistics).

  • ARENAS (Analysis of and Responses to Extremist Narratives) HORIZON-CL2-2022-DEMOCRACY-01 (kick off 1. 5. 2023, team leader, task leader).
  • Ongoing project Creating the Constitution (of the Republic of Slovenia). One of its outcomes is the website https://nastajanje-ustave.si, which marks the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia. All available materials of the Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia and its Commission for Constitutional Issues are digitised and published for the first time, accompanied by in-depth studies on constitutional history (see e-pub: Cerar, Miro, Gašparič, Jure (2022).
